In 2003, Canadian Mental Health Association Durham received its first accreditation from Accreditation Canada, a body that credits hospitals, health clinics, long-term care facilities, and community health centres. We are proud of the fact that CMHA Durham was the first CMHA branch to be accredited in Canada. We have received subsequent accreditation status in 2006, 2009, 2012, and 2016 are preparing for our next survey in 2021.
The accreditation process has been beneficial to our organization because it allows us to assess our compliance with national standards for mental health services, identifying areas for improvement. Our accreditation process is part of our formal Quality Improvement Program, which promotes continuous improvements to services based on customer and stakeholder satisfaction, performance indicators, and information about community and client needs.
We stand behind the accreditation process and have encouraged other community-based health agencies to pursue accreditation. Accreditation Canada has provided us with excellent guidance, support and encouragement, resulting in a rewarding experience.
